Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Two of her earliest television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played the role. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. The same year the actress was selected to play the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young model of the mother's character. She was cast in the role in spite of her strong relationship with the character's family.
